Counting Stars

8 September 2015

As a class, we have been learning Counting Stars by One Republic. We divided into groups of our instrument and learnt our parts, for example, learnt lyrics and the tune.
There are pianists, guitarists, a bass guitarist, a drummer and vocalists. I am working in the vocalist group with Beth, Tino, Sam, Sophie, and Jenny; Jenny, Beth and I all have solos.
Beth has worked out the harmony in the bridge and I am learning it, so that I can join her to strengthen the harmony. Of course, we will practice at home, and hopefully we will all learn the lyrics.

Once we had practiced for maybe forty minutes, we all gathered together as a class to rehearse the song with all the parts. However, in my opinion, the class rehearsal was... not brilliant, if I'm brutally honest. We kept falling out of time, and in a few places, the other soloists didn't come in. When this happened, I did try to bring us back to the right place, but the rest of the group were following the singers that were out of time.

On top of this, the drum beat was fluctuating and speeding up a lot, the guitarists didn't have their riff in the right place and the pianists were often playing the chords out of tune or time. However, I'm optimistic that by our recording, it will be better.

Today, we split into our groups to rehearse briefly, then gathered together to attempt to go through the whole song as a group. This, similarly to last week, fell apart almost instantly- Jenny lost her note. We ran through a few times and it improved drastically, although I wouldn't class it as great.

Once we had run through as a class a few times, Miss began to record. the first one, we literally only recorded one note, as Jenny didn't get the note. The second time, we went all the way up until the end of the first bridge, when it fell apart as no one playing an instrument stopped for Jenny's solo line.

Thankfully, the third and final recording went... well, better. Jenny had a sore throat so her highest lines were given to me and Beth. We managed to go up to the end of the final chorus, so to my final solo. There was another bridge but Miss cut us off as we were running out of time. However, on the whole, the recording went okay, I think. We haven't heard it played back, but I think it was okay. Everyone just about stayed in time and tune, so a success, I suppose.

If we were to repeat this project, I think we'd have longer to rehearse! The recording would have gone much better with more rehearsal time.
